DEALING WITH A DISASTER?

We provide assistance with Disaster Response and Recovery.  We are currently located in NYC 614-579-9855 Oct 20 until late December 2012.

What to do:

bulletDOCUMENT THE DISASTER AND DAMAGE with photographs and inventories. Contact your insurance company, mitigate the damage.
bulletSAFETY FIRST protect your health, wear personal protective equipment, wash your hands, prevent injuries. HEALTH AND SAFETY FIRST
bulletPRIORITIZE THE RECOVERY what is damaged and level of damage - what can be saved, what is most valuable, what is must vulnerable, what is least damaged, most damaged. STABILIZE materials where possible.
bulletPLAN WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO MOVE MATERIALS after prioritizing recovery. Use your team to move materials to a safe, stable environment. Take your time.
bulletMOVE MATERIALS, DO BASIC TRIAGE AND STABILIZATION
bulletRESCUE YOUR PAPER BUSINESS RECORDS if you don't have digital records, you'll need them for insurance purposes.
bulletCONTACT A CONSERVATOR WITH QUESTIONS. You are not alone.

Information about assistance is also available at FEMA (1-800-621-3362)  http://www.disasterassistance.gov/ They work with non-profit organizations open to the public and provide small business loans. FEMA works through your state and is a reimbursement program.

The AIC www.conservation-us.org has Conservation Emergency Response Teams and information 1-202-661-8068 will help connect you with local conservators and information about recovery of water damaged materials.

WORKSHOPS & COURSES

Workshops are one day, 5 to 6 hour- long, hands-on programs designed for libraries, archives, historical societies and other organizations. Shorter lectures and programs are available upon request.
 
The KSU Students section contains workshops, lectures and courses that are currently offered at the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science and are two days in length.  For the most part, these workshops are more in-depth  and are designed for Graduate Level Continuing Education.

 

The 1930 Census is available for the public to search, but Ohio was never indexed completely. Use these techniques to search the  1940 census.  Here are instructions on how to search the 1930 census & a sample search using 1930 techniques and 1920 examples.
