Cultural access seminars address accessibility and
disability awareness and training as it relates to cultural institutions. The
Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) mandates equal access for all people to
facilities, programs and events. Staff training seeks to create an awareness
of cultural access and the unique needs of the disability community among
staff, docents, volunteers and anyone who works directly with the public. The
majority of accommodations made for people with disabilities also benefit the
public at large, and serve only to increase the audience using an institution
and its collections.
Half day seminars provide an overview of ADA and how its
requirements effect cultural institutions, looking at both the physical
facility and such basic requirements as ramps and accommodations, to
programmatic areas such as accessible exhibits and events. Full-day seminars
include a hands-on session which explores ADA requirements more fully, and
allows participants to actually perform components of a building survey. |
