Course Description for

Preservation Management at U of Pitt Summer 2002

#2215 PRESERVATION MANAGEMENT

Instructor’s Goals:  Based upon a thorough basic knowledge of library and archival preservation, we will explore general principles of excellence in management and leadership, and examine their practical applications to the introduction and integration of preservation programs and activities in libraries and archives.

Texts:  There is a new book on the role of preservation in various departments in the library The Preservation Program Blueprint written by Barbra Buckner Higginbotham and Judith Wild. We will take this book together with readings from other books of essays on preservation, and a series of published articles, which will be on course reserve for this course.  On the management side, another required book selected for the course is the recently published Practical Strategies for Library Managers by Joan Giesecke.  This book will serve as your guidebook for becoming middle managers and future leaders.  We will look at various current books and articles on management strategies.  One book that we will use to gain an overview of the world of management is In Search of Excellence by Thomas J. Peters and Robert H. Waterman, Jr.  Other readings will be assigned in the syllabus.

Both required books The Preservation Program Blueprint and Practical Strategies for Library Managers are available through ALA Editions www.ala.org  or 1-800-545-2433 x7

Objectives: This course will help students evaluate preservation needs of various types of libraries and archives; evaluate and negotiate contracts; work cooperatively with other departments, colleagues and vendors.  Students will practice creating supportable justifications for preservation projects and funding.

Class structure and assignments: Classes will combine discussion of current topics in preservation using lectures, videos, guest presentations, discussion of readings and hands-on activities.  Written assignments and projects will be assigned throughout the semester.

Grades:  Grades will be based on active participation and discussion of the assigned readings, presentation of assignments and projects in class.

Additional Activities: I will be arranging for some tours and field trips outside the class hours on Monday afternoons.  The dates and times will be announced on the websites and in class.  The field trips are voluntary but will add to your understanding of Preservation activities and your ability to make decisions.
