Week 1: Introduction – scope of seminar

 
Summary of class discussion:  Class logistics and class goals; contact information and office hours; review syllabus; assignments and expectations; management and leadership concepts; personality types and implications
 
Week 2: Organization and Management Issues for Libraries & Archives
Summary of class discussions:  Organizational cultures, management styles, organizational functions, change.  We will also discuss the role of managers, directors, and supervisors and the integration of preservation activity and actions into the library / archives organization.
 
Week 3: No Class - Memorial Day Weekend
 
Week 4: Working with Facilities and Maintenance & Middle Management
Summary of class discussion: Understanding environmental needs of the library and how to work with others to accomplish goals and complete projects
 
Week 5: Middle Managers and leaders – Collection Development and Acquisitions
 

Summary of class discussions:  Staffing, workflow, communications across the organization and juggling competing collection needs – traditional activities vs. digital, writing and understanding Mission Statements, Understanding how to implement change, organizing and planning programs and functions

 
Week 6: Taking Charge – Managing the work
 
Summary of class discussion: Decision making and delegation are two of the most difficult activities for managers.  A combination of teaching and leading by example will be discussed.
 
After class tour of Iron Mountain / National Underground - long term 'archival' storage of all media
 
Week 7:  Binding and Reformatting
 
Summary of class discussion: Reformatting, and other preservation controversies

Week 8: Mentoring, Managing and Decision making

 
Summary of class discussion do you repair, bind or replace?  How do you decide to perform the work in house or contract for the services?
 
Week 9: The right to reproduce
 
Summary of class discussion: Copyright issues, hows, whys and wherefores.  Deciding what you can do.
 
Week 10:  Preservation and Technology – where the management of the two intersect
 
Summary of class discussion: The future of librarians and archivists!  Also a little management about the importance of communication skills; listening, reading and writing are the key to success.
 
After class tour of Preservation Technologies - Deacidification processes
 

Week 11:  Exhibits, Special Collections and Non-print / Non-paper Formats

 
Summary of class discussion: Organizing responsibilities and special projects such as exhibits and understanding the preservation needs of non-print formats.
 
Week 12: Money matters
case study for funding a project
Summary of class discussion: Grants and external funding – finding it and getting it
