Week 10 Preservation and Technology – where the management of the two intersect

 
Summary of class discussion: The future of librarians and archivists!  Also a little management about the importance of communication skills; listening, reading and writing are the key to success.
 

Topics:

  • Communication Skills are invaluable.  We will discuss the importance of networking and its many purposes; listening to colleagues, bosses and subordinates.

  • Written communication – Grammar and word usage make all the difference!

  • What is the purpose of conferences and what should you get out of them?

  • Networking and its many purposes

Assignment:
  • Be prepared to an active discussion about issues the deal with preservation and technology, including the following topics:  obsolescence, hardware, software, storage, costs, formats that are affected by this ‘catch 22’ and what the library / archives community is doing to remedy the situation 

Post class assignment - due next week :

Write a 3 page letter (max.) to the director of your library or archive recommending or rejecting deacidification of a specific collection.  Use the collection that you work with or have created for the other exercises.

  • Justify your recommendation using preservation literature. 

  • Include at least 3 citations from print or internet sources.
