Summary of class discussions:  Staffing, workflow, communications across the organization and juggling competing collection needs – traditional activities vs. digital, writing and understanding Mission Statements, Understanding how to implement change, organizing and planning programs and functions

Topics:
  • Designing a Project or Program such as a Brittle Books Program.

  • Keeping up with change and developments

  • Supervising and working cooperatively within and without the department

  • Higginbotham and Wild – Preservation Program Blueprint chapter 3

  • Giesecke – Practical Strategies for Library management chapter 3

  • Managing Preservation: A Guidebook Columbus, Ohio: State Library of Ohio, 1995, Chapters 1-2 entitled “Preservation: It’s Every Librarian’s Concern,” and “An Archivist Looks at Preservation, pp. 1-19.

  • The Goal by Eliyahu Goldratt and Jeff Cox readings to be assigned

  • “To Preserve the Best and Noblest Thoughts of Man” American Beginnings by Barbra Buckner Higginbotham in Advances in Preservation and Access Vol. 1 p2-18

 
Assignment:
  • Write a mission statement and collecting policy for your collection.  (1 page each)
