Preservation Issues for Technology

Description:

In this time of ever increasing dependence on technology, we tend to ignore its short lifespan.  As hardware ages, new programs will not run, and as new software is developed, the old is left behind.  Have you tried reading a 5 ¼ inch floppy lately?  Learn about the practical and preservation issues and problems of technological obsolescence and advancements.  The good news is computer hardware and software is not the first medium to encounter this problem.  Let’s learn from other fields and plan for the future.

Many institutions and organizations are working toward a solution to long-term digital storage and preservation.  A discussion of some of the projects and players will be included.

Goals:

Learn the current issues revolving around Preservation and Digitization
Explore the benefits of using digitization for preservation and limited access to the original item
Examine the technical issues involved with preserving the digital media and contents for future generations

Audience:

Librarians and staff interested in technology and its future
