"Train the User"

Training Librarians to Train the User

Description:

These days, much of our work involves helping our patrons use websites, and complicated indexes and reference tools.  How comfortable are you helping your patrons?  Do you feel comfortable helping them with a new reference tool or a ‘never seen it before’ website?  Learn how to approach new reference tools, work with complex indexes.  This workshop will help librarians and staff train the user to explore the web, ignoring the clutter & identifying the important information; explain reference tools; and decipher those unusual indexes as are found in Statistical Abstract.  A side benefit will be learning how to use new reference tools when you answer questions at the reference desk.

Goals:

  • Explaining new websites to users

  • Deciphering indexes 1, 2, 3.
  • Exploring and using new reference tools

Audience:

Librarians and Reference Staff who help patrons with Web-based materials.

Information Technology Staff responsible for designing websites or teaching the public to use them
